Yahoo faking search query volume?

Sep

Is Yahoo trying to boost its own search volume by adding queries as links to their news articles?

Yahoo boosting search volume through news

I was reading the article “Singapore, the next Silicon Valley for Social Innovation?” when i noticed a number of links, which is normal in an article. What wasn’t normal though, was that instead of linking directly to the organisation or event, it linked to a yahoo search query on the event/organisation.

Yahoo news links leads to search query

What. The. Fuck?

Well done, Yahoo. You have successfully inflated your search volumes, and pissed me off. What a lame way to fake numbers.

Have you had the same encounter?

Play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon on Google

Google’s search algorithm is so powerful, you can now play Six degrees of Kevin Bacon on it.

Look.

Fann Wong Bacon Number

Sharlto Copley Bacon Number

How fun.

I wonder which actors are higher up in numbers? I’d have thought local actress Fann would have been obscure enough.

Let’s take a look at mediacorp’s first macho uber leading man hunk Li Nanxing.

Li Nanxing Bacon Number

Erm… oh well, at least he has a wiki entry!

Go play on Google’s homepage! Just type in actor’s name followed by the phrase “bacon number”.

I love Google.

So there you are, social media evangelist for Starhub. You found something cool, like keyboard teacups, and decide to share it with your fans as part of an engagement post.

And truth be told, the cups really are cool and cute and geeky. No way this is going to get any negative feedback.
